SEO, AEO, and GEO: what’s the difference?

Three disciplines, one evolving search landscape. A plain-language explanation of how SEO, Answer Engine Optimization, and Generative Engine Optimization differ — and where they overlap.

Search used to mean one thing: a list of links. Today, a customer might find a business through a ranked result, a map, a featured answer, a voice assistant, or a paragraph written by an AI system. Each of those surfaces works a little differently, which is why three related disciplines now exist.

SEO — be found

Search engine optimization makes a website easier for search engines to crawl, understand, and rank. It covers technical health, content, site structure, and how well each page matches what people are searching for. SEO remains the foundation: if search engines cannot understand your site, nothing built on top of it works well.

AEO — be answered

Answer Engine Optimization focuses on questions. It structures content so that answer-driven experiences — featured snippets, voice assistants, and AI-generated answers — can identify a clear, accurate answer on your site. In practice, that means question-based content, direct answers placed where they are easy to find, and structured data where it is appropriate.

GEO — be understood

Generative Engine Optimization is the newest of the three. Generative search systems describe businesses in their own words, drawing on information from across the web. GEO strengthens the signals those systems rely on: consistent facts about who you are, what you do, and where you operate, plus credible evidence of expertise.

No one can guarantee that a business will appear in a particular AI product. What can be improved is how clearly and consistently the business is represented.

How they fit together

The three disciplines overlap more than they compete. A clear, well-structured, fast website supports all of them. A business can start with any one — most start with SEO — and add the others as its customers’ search habits change.
